Freeride is skiing untracked snow and enjoying it — and that feeling is far better once you can anticipate your line, read the terrain before committing to it, control how progressively the feet pivot, and manage active rotation without losing your axis. You can work at that on instinct for years and improve slowly. Or you can do it with a TD3 instructor who has 24 seasons in Baqueira and knows exactly which exercise to set, or which single cue to give, based on what he is watching.
TD3 Instructors With Real Freeride Experience
TD3 is the highest alpine skiing qualification in Spain. At Alpine Ski Academy, the instructors who teach freeride have spent years working off-piste in Baqueira Beret: they know which aspects hold the best snow, which bowls fill with powder after a fall, the gentle transition zones that suit beginners, and the technical corners where advanced skiers can work short turns on demanding terrain.
A Real Technical Method, Not Just Guiding
We love simply riding untracked snow, but every lesson also has a technical structure: an honest diagnosis of the skier's level, the right area chosen for it, progressive work on the freeride-specific stance, and concrete corrections on the snow. For beginners we use rebound-feel exercises — small opening and closing of the hips combined with light knee flexion on traverses — and progressive foot-pivot work with long arcs and wide radii on gentle slopes, tightening as ability grows. At advanced level we work on descent tactics, reading terrain and choosing lines.
Areas of Baqueira Nobody Else Knows the Same Way
We choose the area each day, with no fixed protocol. For beginners: the gentle transition zones in Beret, or Argulls. For intermediate and advanced in Beret: Sumet, Baciver, Dosau or the Lacs deth Clot der Os. For stronger skiers in Baqueira: Pales de Manaud-Solei, Escornacrabes, Pasarells or the Teso dera Mina. In Bonaigua, Peülla among other demanding areas. For good bowls at intermediate and advanced level: Pales del Arias or the lower part of Tubo Nere right through the winter, and Manaud-Solei in seasons with plenty of snow.
Safety Without Compromise
We never cross ropes or enter closed areas. Our TD3 instructors are authorised to teach off-piste within the ski area. We recommend, and advise on the use of, an ARVA transceiver, shovel, probe and ABS airbag pack on every freeride session, including inside the ski area.
