Every week the same question reaches us, phrased a thousand different ways: «private or group?». And every time we answer with a plain «it depends», we know we are not really helping. Because the underlying question is not which is better. It is which of the two products —because they are two products, not two versions of the same one— fits what you need this week in Baqueira.
At Alpine Ski Academy we have run both formats for over two decades, and we have seen it all: families who pick a group purely on price and end up frustrated, adults who pay for a private lesson without knowing a group would have given them the same thing, and the opposite too — people happy with the decision they made because they understood what they were buying.
This article does not compare in order to crown a winner. It explains how each format works from the inside —properly, not in the abridged brochure version— so that you decide with real information.

The most widespread belief is «group = cheaper, private = better». Both halves of that sentence are incomplete. A group is not a scaled-down private lesson: it is a format with its own teaching logic, its own advantages and its own way of managing each student. And a private lesson is not automatically «better» if what you want is precisely what the group offers and the private lesson does not: atmosphere, technical reference points and shared motivation.
The problem appears when someone chooses without knowing what they are buying. A family that puts its children in a group purely on price, without understanding that a group works better with some real homogeneity, can end up with a worse experience than if they had invested in a private lesson. And someone who pays for a private lesson thinking it is «always better» may be overpaying for something a well-formed group would have given them just the same.
The private lesson in Baqueira: what you get that no group can give you
The private lesson for children or for adults in Baqueira is not «a group of one». It is a different product by design — and it is not only for one person either: it can be arranged for whatever group you need, with no cap on participants, as long as the level is similar, adding €5 an hour for each extra person on top of the base rate.
Real personalisation, with no ceiling
Your instructor works exclusively with your group from the moment you put the skis on until you hand them back. Every exercise adapts to the response of the moment — not to the pace a larger group allows that day.
You choose the meeting point
The private lesson can be arranged with pick-up at Baqueira 1500, Baqueira 1800, Beret, Bonaigua, Ruda or Tanau, at no extra cost. In a group, by contrast, the point and the time are always the same for everyone.
The timetable adapts, not the other way round
Where there is availability, moving the session from morning to afternoon is perfectly workable, as is adjusting the drop-off point (Orri, Beret, Baqueira 1500 or the hotel) when there is no other lesson straight after. None of this depends on fitting around other students' schedules.
You choose the duration too
The private lesson is booked in half-hour steps, from 1 hour up to 6 hours (a full day): 1 h, 1:30 h, 2 h, 2:30 h and so on. The group lesson has a fixed duration of 3 hours — or 4 if every member of the group asks for it and it can be arranged — without the intermediate steps.
You decide what the session covers
Want to spend the whole day working off-piste, or go over carving alone? The instructor adapts freely to what you ask for — in a group, the itinerary is set by the instructor with the whole group in mind.
No cap on the number of people
The private lesson can be arranged for whatever group you need — there is no cap on participants, as long as the level is similar. And from 3 people on, the total cost is already lower in absolute terms than booking the same places in a group.
The only format that guarantees 100 % every time
For nervous beginners, for someone coming back from injury, or for anyone wanting to move fast in a few days, the private lesson is where that total adaptation does not depend on how the rest of a group fits together that week — it holds every time: timing, meeting point, pace and content.

The group lesson in Baqueira: what a homogeneous group really means
«Homogeneous group» does not mean everyone skis equally well technically. It means the group lesson for children —or the one for adults— has a similar capacity to take on the same kind of terrain: someone technically very correct but unwilling to tackle a red run cannot be in the same group as someone who does ski reds, even if the second lacks style. It is the terrain you can take on together, not the quality of the technical movement, that defines whether a group works as a group.
The more we know about each student —age, level, a short video over WhatsApp, a description of attitude, motivation or fear from the adult or the parents— the better we get the group right from day one. But the first day is the first day: it is when the group meets, and there the empathy of everyone involved matters as much as the instructor's organisation.
How we handle differences of pace within a session
When differences of speed or terrain appear within the group, there are real tools to resolve it without leaving anyone out: sections of more demanding piste or off-piste with nearby access and an easy alternative always in view; short runs on wide pistes with full sightlines, where the instructor asks a little more of whoever wants it without losing sight of the rest; or individual exercises in a controlled working area, each at their own pace.
How the group dynamic evolves over the week
A group's dynamic is not fixed from the first minute — it gets built. The instructor gets to know each student as the hours pass, and organises the order of the line, the working areas, how the group moves on the chairlift and how its members interact, so that everyone leaves with their expectations met.
If after the first session there are differences of age or circumstance that will not be resolved within the normal dynamic of the group, we speak directly to the families involved to find the best solution for the next day. It is bad for whoever is bored and bad for whoever is being pushed — and at Alpine, the group technician and the management keep reorganising until they consider the group homogeneous enough.
A real case
Not everything that looks like a group problem is one. Last year a group of six teenagers went through this with Jorge, one of our instructors, in the middle of the busiest week of the season: enormous queues at every lift, far longer than usual to get to the top, and on the first run a student hurt herself — nothing serious, but handling the fall and waiting for her parents took the flow out of the rest of the day.
Some of the group, without knowing the context, read it as the group's level being the problem. Talking it through with Jorge and reviewing what happened, it was clear it was not — the cause had been that day's exceptional crowds, not the make-up of the group. The next day we brought the start of the lesson forward, keeping the same group intact, to dodge the early-morning crush, and the week ended up a success: everyone came away enjoying it and learning.
Real progress in each format
In a private lesson there is no waiting for progress: an adult beginner usually handles green runs on the first day and gentle blues by the third or fourth, a rate that speeds up because there is no adapting to a group in between.
In a group, progress is built differently: through the week the instructor adjusts the daily itinerary and the exercises according to how the whole group develops, and a good part of the advance also comes from watching someone at your level execute a turn well — something no verbal explanation replaces.
Private or group: it is not which is better, it is what you are after
In Baqueira, when someone asks me which to choose, the first question I put back to them is: what are you after this week?

And a more accessible value for money, and your profile fits a group at your level, the group lesson does its job perfectly — though there the meeting point and the timing no longer adapt to you: they are the same for the whole group.
And bear in mind a figure that surprises a lot of families: from 3 people at a similar level, the private lesson already works out cheaper in total than the group — on top of coming with all the flexibility of timing, meeting point and session content.
