Where to eat on the slopes in Baqueira Beret and at its bases

To eat on the slopes in Baqueira Beret there are table-service restaurants (Cinco Jotas in 1800, Pla de Beret, the 2.200 and the Moët Winter Lounge in Orri), self-service places in 1800 and Beret, and pàrrecs - open-air mountain bars - and cafés in every sector. At the bases of 1500, Val de Ruda and Tanau there are more options right by the slopes.

Choosing well where to eat on the slopes in Baqueira saves you queues and half a lost afternoon. The key is knowing what there is in the sector you are skiing in at that hour. I have been teaching at this resort for more than two decades and I have eaten in almost all of these places: here is what to order and when to go.

Each sector works almost like a resort of its own, and crossing from one to another at midday takes time. If you are with children, lunch also has to fit the lesson. In our private family lessons we adapt the end of the lesson to your lunch plan whenever the two can be combined. For dinner in the villages, there is our guide to restaurants in Baqueira Beret and Val d'Aran.

Restaurants in Baqueira 1800 and 2200

Cinco Jotas Grill (1800): Iberian ham and the grill, with a view

A linen-tablecloth restaurant at the top of the gondola, at the foot of the Pla de Baqueira chairlift. A menu of acorn-fed Jabugo Iberian ham, grilled meat, stews and fish, with a central fireplace and a terrace looking out at the Aneto. Afterwards you can go down on the Huevo - the gondola, as we call it - ski the la 1 run down to 1500, or go back up to 2,300 metres.

What I order: the lamb's lettuce salad with goat's cheese, the croquettes and the grilled Iberian pluma, their speciality. If you book inside, ask for a table by the window; the terrace is worth it on sunny days.

La Choza and Bosque Free Flow: eating quickly in 1800

La Choza, below the Cinco Jotas, is the café: fried eggs, sandwiches and coffee. Bosque Free Flow is the big self-service in the beginner area, with pasta, pizza, hot dishes and a terrace. It is the most practical with children.

Bar-Restaurante 2.200: a chuletón with a 360-degree view

A circular building on the plateau at 2200 m, halfway between a restaurant and a café. You get there on skis from the Mirador, the Pla de Baqueira or the Solei chairlift that comes up from Argulls, and you can only leave it skiing downhill.

What I would single out: the grilled chuletón with potatoes, which you order and collect at the grill on the terrace, the fondue and the salads. For a short stop, tapas and coffee. The feel is informal: inside it works almost like a self-service.

You reach the 2.200 on skis and you can only leave it downhill: worth bearing in mind.

Where to eat in Beret: restaurant, self-service and pàrrecs

Beret has its venues together next to the car park, so you can also walk there. That is handy if someone in the group is not skiing.

Restaurante Pla de Beret: mountain cooking à la carte

The only à la carte restaurant in Beret, with a linen tablecloth and the decor of a traditional Aranese borda. What I would single out: meat with potatoes, stews such as the pork cheeks, and good salads.

Self-Service Audeth and Bar er Audeth: eating quickly in Beret

The self-service, in the same building, serves starters, mains and desserts. For me it is quick, convenient and efficient: more substantial than a café, and good. On the ground floor, the Bar er Audeth makes cold and hot sandwiches and has a terrace with sun loungers.

The Self-Service Audeth: more substantial than a café and quick when you are in a hurry.

Pàrrec Blanhiblar, Pàrrec Dossau and the Audi quattro Bar

The Pàrrec Blanhiblar is, for me, the morning stop par excellence: high up, south-facing and looking out over the whole Pla de Beret. Its speciality is acorn-fed ham with cava. The Pàrrec Dossau is another open-air stop, and both get a DJ on special occasions. The Audi quattro Bar, on the Beret terrace, works for breakfast or an aperitif.

Moët Winter Lounge in Orri: sushi, champagne and après-ski

It sits at 1,800 metres in Orri, next to the Jorge Jordana chairlift. You arrive coming down the Cara Nord, returning from Beret on the Vista Beret, or from Baciver and Saumet. It is the nearest stop if you are skiing in Baciver. A festive lounge atmosphere, the only place on the slopes with a resident DJ, fireplaces inside and heaters on the terrace. Meals inside and group dinners are booked.

What I would single out: the sushi, the only one on the slopes and very good, plus the tortilla de patatas, the foie montaditos, the chuletón and the Angus burger. Prices, drinks above all, are higher than elsewhere. You come here for champagne with something to eat.

Where to eat in Bonaigua: Refugi San Miguel and Cap del Port

The Bar Bonaigua café serves sandwiches, broths, hot chocolate and soft drinks, with a terrace facing the Aigüestortes National Park and the Pàrrec Bonaigua beside it. The Refugi San Miguel, the old road refuge at the pass, has a tapas bar and a restaurant in separate rooms, with the grill as its speciality.

The Cap del Port is a stone building with a 1924 tower, at the top of the pass at 2,072 metres. What I would single out: an à la carte restaurant with tables for six or eight in the tower, famous for its huevos estrellados and perfect mid morning. You get there on skis from the Bonaigua run, with a small detour to the left.

Where to eat in Baqueira 1500 when you come down from the slopes

That is everything you can reach without taking your skis off. From here on, the alternatives at the bases, for when you finish the day or break it at midday. The centre of 1500 is around the exit of the Huevo, as we call the gondola, the Plaza Fórum and the Hotel Montarto. Ticolet is already covered in the restaurant guide.

By the gondola and the Plaza Fórum

  • Tendenou: opposite the mid station of the Huevo, in the Edificio Cap d'Aran. Breakfast from 8:00, sandwiches and a set lunch. For stopping and going back up, or for ending the day.
  • Baqueira Bar 1500: next to the ticket offices, with a terrace and music at weekends.
  • La Borda Lobató: the oldest building at the resort, a stone borda next to the Montarto. Grill, suckling pig and lamb.
  • Wine Bar by Viña Pomal and Xocolateria Jolonch: in the Montarto. Tapas and wine in the first; stone-ground hot chocolate and pastries in the second.
  • Pecado: in the Edificio Mauberme. Sharing plates such as the truffled tortilla or the steak tartare.

Burgers, pizza and rice dishes in 1500

  • Blanc Bistró & Terraza (Hotel Tuc Blanc): very good burgers, onion soup, a set lunch and a children's menu. Quiet and well priced. Ideal if you come down at 14:30; at midday you go back up on the Huevo or the Bosque chairlift. It takes no bookings.
  • Brooklyn 1500: informal. Their burgers are very good.
  • L'Informal: in the Multipropiedad building. Rice dishes, tapas and bluefin tuna tataki.
  • La Granja (Edificio Saumet) and Pizzería Montgarri (Edificio Campalias): pizza and family cooking.
  • Escornacrabes: burgers and crêpes next to the medical centre, opposite the Montarto.
  • Cafetería del Solneu: opposite the Huevo, in Ruda. More a bar than a restaurant: sandwiches, tapas and plated dishes.

The Blanc Bistró takes no bookings, but there is usually a table at 14:30.

Restaurants in Val de Ruda: Hincha, Val de Neu and Nhac

Hincha, in the Hotel MiM, belongs to the chef Nandu Jubany. What I would single out: a smarter and slightly pricier place, with excellent carpaccios, very good pizza and sharing dishes such as the corn. The Hotel Val de Neu opens La Fondue (fondue and raclette), Aran (traditional cooking), El Bistró and La Nonna (Italian) to the public. In the galleries, Nhac serves informal food most of the day, and Häagen-Dazs ice cream and crêpes.

Where to eat in Tanau (1700 m)

Tanau Sabor is a gourmet option in a small room that fills up fast: book. It is right by the slopes and you come back on the Tanau chairlift; not as seamless as a restaurant on the mountain, but quick. At the Hotel La Pleta, next to the Esquiròs chairlift, are La Racletterie and a sushi restaurant. The Bar Era Cabana is there for a coffee on the terrace.

What time should you eat on the slopes in Baqueira to avoid the wait?

The restaurants fill up between 13:00-13:30 and 15:00: eat before or after. The Cinco Jotas has two booking sittings, around 12:45 and 14:30. Do not go too late: many close around 16:00 and from 15:00 some have already closed the kitchen.

SituationWhat to expectWhat to do
Peak weeks (Christmas, bank holidays, Easter)Any of them can fill upBook as early as you can, or go down to 1500, where it is quieter
Mid-season weeksThe Cinco Jotas and the Moët are the hardestBook those two
Quiet weeksRoom at almost all of themAvoid the 13:30 to 15:00 window

My advice: decide before you go up which sector you are going to eat in, and eat where you are skiing. From 13:30 the slopes empty out, so eating early leaves you the afternoon almost to yourself.

Eating on the slopes with children in a ski lesson

In a private lesson, the instructor can finish at the bottom of a chairlift near the restaurant, or work out the time back, depending on their schedule. If you want to eat in another sector, tell them: they will adapt the route of the lesson. In group lessons, the meeting points are fixed, in Baqueira and in Beret. Telling you where to eat is one of the things our team of ski instructors in Baqueira does at no cost.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about eating on the slopes in Baqueira

What you ask us most when it comes to organising lunch in the middle of the day.

Do you need to book to eat on the slopes in Baqueira?

At the table-service restaurants, yes, and well in advance in peak weeks: Cinco Jotas, 2.200, Moët, Pla de Beret and the Bonaigua restaurant. You book from each one's page on the Baqueira Beret catering site. Cafés, self-service places and pàrrecs do not take bookings.

Can you book your lunch when you buy the lift pass?

Yes. At reservas.baqueira.es the resort sells restaurant, self-service and sandwich menus at a special price.

Can you eat gluten free on the slopes in Baqueira?

Yes. There are gluten-free options at Pla de Beret, Self-Service Audeth, Bosque Free Flow, Cinco Jotas, the 2.200 and the Hotel Montarto buffet. Say so when you order.

Can you do a full day of lessons and eat with the instructor?

Yes. At Alpine a full day is 6 hours of lessons and the lunch break is not charged. You choose: eat with the instructor, who uses the time to go over the morning and take you to whichever stop fits best, or eat on your own and have them pick you up afterwards. If they eat with you, you only pay for their meal.

Where do you eat if you are skiing in Baciver?

Baciver has no restaurant of its own. The nearest is the Moët Winter Lounge, in Orri, which you reach on skis from Baciver and Saumet.

What do I do about lunch if my child's lesson finishes at midday?

Ask the instructor to finish at the bottom of a chairlift near the restaurant, or to time the way back to suit you. On the mountain, the most practical choices with children are Bosque Free Flow, in 1800, or the Self-Service Audeth, in Beret. At Alpine, private lessons for children start at €60 an hour in the afternoon and €67.50 in the morning, and a group costs €24 an hour. All the rates are in ski lesson prices in Baqueira.
