Nursery or ski lesson in Baqueira for young children

In Baqueira, a child of 3 or 4 does not have to choose between the nursery and a ski lesson: what works best is combining them. They spend the day playing at BabyBaqueira 1800 or Baby Beret, and an instructor collects them there for a one-hour private lesson, extendable to an hour and a half if the child is up for it.

Nursery and ski lessons in Baqueira go together better than many families imagine. Coming with a baby or a 3-year-old does not mean giving up the snow. Nor does it mean the little one has to spend three hours on the piste before they are ready.

The question usually comes up the moment the trip is booked. Do we leave them at the nursery? Do we sign them up for a lesson? And what if they cry? Every family solves it their own way, but the child's age and where they are developmentally decide what makes sense. For the youngest we work with short private ski lessons for children that fit inside the nursery day.

In this guide I explain which nursery suits which age, when the first lesson makes sense, and how we organise the combination at Alpine Ski Academy.

Nurseries in Baqueira Beret: BabyBaqueira 1500, 1800 and Beret by age

BabyBaqueira is the resort's childcare service. It has two snow parks and one park for the youngest, each in a different sector. Choosing well matters: each park is designed for a particular age and stage.

Baby Baqueira 1500: nursery for babies from 6 months to 3 years

This is the park for the youngest. It is in the 1500 village and you reach it by car, with no lifts involved. The babies play inside the borda and go out into a small snow garden of their own. There is no skiing here: it is the option that lets parents enjoy the resort knowing the baby is well looked after.

Baby Baqueira 1800: nursery for 3 to 7 year-olds, on the slopes

It is in Baqueira 1800, the heart of the resort, and you reach it by lift. The children combine indoor and outdoor play with their first contact with ski equipment. It is the nursery we use most at Alpine: the beginner area is a few metres away and the instructor collects the child without losing lesson time.

Baby Beret: nursery in Beret by the hour or for the full day

It is at the base of Beret, next to the ticket offices, and you can drive right to the door. It offers the same as 1800 plus one advantage of its own: you can book by the hour. If the family is skiing in Beret, the Alpine instructor collects the child there just as at 1800.

In the 1800 and Beret parks the children already play in the snow and get familiar with the equipment alongside the park staff. That first contact is very valuable, but it is not a ski lesson. That part is the instructor's job.

Skiing in Baqueira with a baby: the nursery for under-3s

With a baby, the answer is simple: Baby Baqueira 1500 for the morning, the afternoon or the full day. Meanwhile, the parents ski or take a lesson.

At that age we do not recommend a ski lesson. The point of the trip is not for the baby to ski. It is for the family to come to the snow without anyone being left at the hotel. Many families use those hours for their own lesson, or for the older siblings' lessons.

Laura and Jordi came with Martina, 14 months, and Pau, 8. Every morning they dropped Martina at Baby Baqueira 1500 on the way to the resort. Pau had a private lesson first thing. Meanwhile, the two of them skied together, something they had not done since the little one was born. At midday they picked Martina up and the afternoon was for the four of them. They went home feeling they had had a real snow holiday, not a half trip.

Ski lessons for children of 3, 4 and 5 in Baqueira: which format to choose

Age and stageNurseryLessonWhat we recommend
Under 3Baby Baqueira 1500NoThe nursery lets the parents ski
3-4, first timeBabyBaqueira 1800 or BeretPrivate, 1 h (up to 1 h 30)Collected at the nursery and taken back there
5-7, complete beginnerOptional, half dayPrivate, 2 h or more2-3 days of private lessons to get going
5-7, already snowploughing or starting to turnOptionalPrivate or groupIf you prefer, they can move to a group now

From 5, a child can start from scratch in a group. It can be done, but it tends to feel heavier going. Each child practises for less time, the instructor's attention is shared, and the lesson lasts longer than their concentration holds. That is why we recommend a few private hours at the start. Once they are coming down in a snowplough in a straight line, or starting to turn, group ski lessons for children work very well. It is not a rule: it is what has given us the best results.

Ski lesson with collection at BabyBaqueira 1800 and Beret: how it works

In the morning the family goes up together in the gondola, the “egg”, as we call it here. The little one stays at the nursery: they play with other children and have lunch there. At the agreed time, their instructor collects them at the park and they head out to the beginner area.

When the lesson ends, the parents and the brothers and sisters arrive. There is a chat with the instructor about how it went. Often the whole family does the last run together, and then they all go back down in the egg, to the hotel or home.

For the child, that ending changes everything. They have done the same as everyone else: ridden the gondola, skied, and come down with their family. They feel they are part of the skiing family now. It has worked for us for many years.

That ending, with the family watching, is what makes a child want to come back.

What a 3-year-old does in their first hour on skis in Baqueira

Sliding, staying on their feet, trying the snowplough. All of it through play, with simple instructions the child copies. The technical explanation is the instructor's business, never the child's.

Can parents watch their child's ski lesson in Baqueira?

Yes, parents who want to can stay and watch the lesson. We only ask one thing: do it from a distance, from somewhere the child cannot see you.

When a young child sees their parents, their attention goes with them. They want to come to you, show you what they are doing, or they simply stop listening to the instructor. From somewhere discreet you can enjoy their progress without interfering, and the instructor can hold their full attention. At the end, they will tell you all about it themselves.

How long should a ski lesson be for a 3-year-old?

At this age attention is short. As a rule of thumb, a child concentrates on one task for about their age times two, plus two, in minutes. At 3, about eight minutes. A one-hour lesson allows several short games with the child still fresh. Three hours straight usually ends in tiredness, resistance or tears, and in a child who does not want to come back.

That is why the lesson lasts an hour, and only stretches to an hour and a half if the child asks for it and is up to it. We want them to finish wanting more.

What does a child of 3 or 4 do for three hours of skiing in a row? That is why we do not sell morning courses or full-day courses at this age. We do not believe it is what such a young child needs in order to fall in love with the snow. Longer lessons will come, when they are ready.

Skiing with brothers and sisters of different ages: nursery and lesson at once

It is one of the most common combinations. Marta and Álex came with Lucía, 3, and Hugo, 6. Hugo had a two-hour private lesson in the morning and Lucía spent the day at BabyBaqueira 1800. At 15:00, her instructor collected her from the nursery. Hugo and his parents skied until 16:00 and arrived just at the end of his sister's lesson. The four of them did the last run together, and Lucía came down in the egg telling everyone what she had done, one of the gang.

Where to collect your child after the lesson in Baqueira

If the child is at the nursery, you collect them there, at the time you booked. If the lesson is the last activity of the day, the instructor hands them over at an agreed point. For private lessons we can also collect from and return to your hotel, if it fits the instructor's schedule.

The best time of day for a child's first ski lesson in Baqueira

Our experience is clear: for the youngest, the afternoon is the best moment. From 14:00 onwards, everything works in the child's favour:

  • They have eaten and had their nap, so they arrive rested and in a good mood.
  • The family has already skied all day and is in no hurry.
  • The slopes empty out: with no queues or crowds, the beginner area is quieter and safer.
  • The day ends with the lesson. When the child tires, the parents arrive and you leave together. No going back to the nursery.

An example: if the family skis until 16:00, the lesson runs from 15:00 to 16:00. The little one eats at the nursery, rests, does their hour on skis, and their parents arrive after their own last run. That loop is, for us, the perfect formula.

Some families prefer the morning, with the child fresh off the journey and full of energy. Tell us when you book and we will fit the time around your day.

The Especial Baby lift pass and equipment for the nursery and the lesson in Baqueira

  • Lift pass: getting to 1800 means taking lifts, so the child needs a lift pass. Baqueira has a special rate for the youngest, and it is very cheap; the current conditions are on their website.
  • Helmet: compulsory in the lesson. The instructor brings the ski tip connector.
  • Equipment for the nursery: in the 1800 and Beret snow parks the child needs their own helmet, goggles, boots and skis, because they already play with the equipment there.
  • Bag for the nursery: a labelled change of clothes and sun cream. If they are in nappies: nappies, wipes and cream.

Boots, ski length and layers of clothing make a big difference to a first lesson. We cover it in detail in our guide to beginner children on skis in Baqueira. And if you have any doubts about kitting them out, just ask when you book: we are happy to advise.

A 3-year-old's first ski season: Alpine's recommendation

After many winters with very young children, we are clear about it: the first season is not measured in pistes. It is measured in enthusiasm. A child who finishes their hour asking for more progresses further the second year than one who endured three hours in tears.

That is why we combine the nursery with a short lesson. The child experiences the snow at their own pace, the family skis in peace, and the lesson comes when the little one is fresh. It is part of what we understand by a ski school in Baqueira Beret.
